Short Game PDF Print E-mail

In our Short Game Workshops we work on three types chip shots that we can have.

We teach our pupils to control the spin of there chip shots which sounds pretty fancy but after only a little bit of practice they are nearly experts.

To control the spin we need to learn the following shots

  1. Basic Sweep were the ball is struck at the bottom of the arc and it comes off with minimal spin
  2. Pinch shot were the ball is placed further back in the stance and is struck with a descending blow causing the ball to roll up the face and come off with extra spin.
  3. Cut Pinch same as the pinch shot but for extra spin we open the face

Try to avoid 2 and 3 as much as possible as they create the most spin of the face and are hardest to judge the landing.

You will see tournament professionals spinning the ball back on the greens on TV. This can only be achieved if we have 2 conditions. Firstly and most importantly they are full swing shots with high lofted clubs 8, 9 and wedge shots. Secondly the greens are soft and fast. This typical of the greens you would find on the US tour that are televised.

High amounts of spin is the result of a fast moving high lofted club so if you are having difficulty in chipping you may try  one of our short game workshops.

Academy Golf Tips

Topping the Ball

At the academy lesson tee we often here that the poor  shot that was just hit by the pupil, was caused by many different things. Either I lifted my head or my left arm was bent or the ball position was'nt quit right. All of these may be true but really have little or no effect on the way the ball has been struck. The golf swing is complex and understanding that it is a complex mechanism is better than being confused by oversimplified myths such as above.
